Forest Stewardship Council
The Forest Stewardship Council mission is to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world's forests.
Their vision is to meet current forest product needs without compromising the health of the world’s forests for future generations.
This vision is encapsulated within 10 principles and 57 criteria that govern the responsible management of FSC certified forests worldwide.
In addition to the principles governing forest management, the FSC has created a Chain of Custody (CoC) system for material as it moves from the forest to the final consumer. This portion of the process, is designed to provide consumers with a high level of confidence that the materials they purchase, though often significantly transformed, are made of wood/lumber/pulp harvested in FSC certified forests.
Chain of Custody
Both standards, Forest Management and Chain of Custody, require the participating company to bring in outside vendors to assess and review the systems of the participant, both in structure and implementation. This assessment, or audit, is the basis for the outside vendor, or third party auditor, to 'certify' the participant is meeting the standards of the FSC system.
It is under this CoC system, which RACG operates; providing participants with documentation to help get the process started, consultation to understand the standards and requirements, expert knowledge and support across the board, and finally, an internal review of the participants system. By doing so, RACG has been able to cut the average cost of certification and the average time commitment, both before and after the 'audit', in half.
To assist small businesses with the cost of certification, the FSC created the group standard. This standard allows companies that conduct less than five million dollars ($5,000,000) per year in total wood product sales, to 'group' together with other small companies to share a common certificate. It is under this system that RACG operates. Total sales may exceed five million dollars if there are divisions that separately conduct non wood product related services, such as website development or fulfillment. If you have less than five million a year in sales, or are close to that, contact us and see if you qualify to participate.
